The 800xA System software is packaged in a set of DVD’s. The system installation is supported by the Automated Installation program. The Automated Installation program is a shell framework to ease the installation and configuration of your 800xA System. Installation is never prevented due to lack of licensing, but licenses are required to unlock features for operating or engineering the system. Updates and security related software from non-ABB companies must be downloaded and installed separately, as guided from the Automated Installation program.

The CPU board contains the microprocessor and RAM memory, a real-time clock, LED indicators, INIT push button, and a CompactFlash interface. The base plate of the PM864AK01 controller has two RJ45 Ethernet ports (CN1, CN2) for connection to the Control Network, and two RJ45 serial ports (COM3, COM4). One of the serial ports (COM3) is an RS-232C port with modem control signals, whereas the other port (COM4) is isolated and used for the connection of a configuration tool. The controller supports CPU redundancy for higher availability (CPU, CEX-Bus, communication interfaces and S800 I/O).

The baseplate of the PM8xx units (except PM891) has two RJ45 Ethernet ports (CN1, CN2) for connection to the control network, and two RJ45 serial ports (COM3, COM4). One of the serial ports (COM3) is an RS-232C port signal with modem control, while the other port (COM4) is isolated and is used to connect to the configuration tool. Note that the PM851/PM851A is limited to one Ethernet (CN1) port, so redundant Ethernet is not available.Electrical module bus and communication expansion bus (CEX bus) connectors are installed on the baseplate. The built-in electrical module bus can be used in a single CPU configuration for connecting a group of S800 I/O units directly to the baseplate (maximum number of units per cluster is 12). However, an additional seven clusters (each containing up to 12 units) can be added to the optical module bus.
